The Doctrine and Covenants
SECTION 100
Revelation given to Joseph Smith the Prophet and Sidney
Rigdon, at Perrysburg, New York, October 12, 1833. The two brethren,
having been absent from their families for several days, felt some
concern about them.
1–4, Joseph and Sidney to preach the gospel for the salvation of souls;
5–8, It will be given them in the very hour what they should say; 9–12,
Sidney is to be a spokesman and Joseph is to be a revelator and mighty
in testimony; 13–17, The Lord will raise up a pure people, and the
obedient will be saved.
1 Verily, thus saith the Lord unto you, my friends Sidney and Joseph,
your families are well; they are in mine hands, and I will do with them
as seemeth me good; for in me there is all power.
Note: Sidney Rigdon and Joseph Smith did not support their families.
When Joseph Smith left Kirtland, Ohio, on October 5, 1833, for a
proselytizing mission to Upper Canada with Sidney Rigdon, his wife,
Emma Smith, remained behind in Kirtland to manage the household and
care for their young children (Julia and the infant Joseph III). During
this period, Emma and the broader Smith family relied on the local
Kirtland community, neighbors, and fellow church members rather than a
single designated caretaker.
2 Therefore, follow me, and listen to the counsel which I shall give
unto you. 3 Behold, and lo, I have much people in this place, in the
regions round about; and an effectual door shall be opened in the
regions round about in this eastern land.
Note: Sidney Rigdon and Joseph Smith were doing damage control in New York.
At the request of an anti-Mormon Ohio committee, Hurlbut traveled to
Palmyra, New York, where Smith had lived when Mormonism was developed
and obtained affidavits from people who were familiar with the Smith
family. His journey was done for the purpose of "collecting statements
disparaging to the Smith name" and to "completely divest Joseph Smith
of all claims to the character of an honest man and place him at an
immeasurable distance from the high station which he pretends to
occupy."
4 Therefore, I, the Lord, have suffered you to come unto this place;
for thus it was expedient in me for the salvation of souls. 5
Therefore, verily I say unto you, lift up your voices unto this people;
speak the thoughts that I shall put into your hearts, and you shall not
be confounded before men; 6 For it shall be given you in the very hour,
yea, in the very moment, what ye shall say. 7 But a commandment I give
unto you, that ye shall declare whatsoever thing ye declare in my name,
in solemnity of heart, in the spirit of meekness, in all things. 8 And
I give unto you this promise, that inasmuch as ye do this the Holy
Ghost shall be shed forth in bearing record unto all things whatsoever
ye shall say. 9 And it is expedient in me that you, my servant Sidney,
should be a spokesman unto this people; yea, verily, I will ordain you
unto this calling, even to be a spokesman unto my servant Joseph.

Doctor Philastus Hurlbut's Investigation: In late 1833 (November and
December), Hurlbut—an apostate ex-member hired by critics in New
York—traveled through Palmyra and Manchester, New York, collecting
critical affidavits from local residents. These affidavits heavily
targeted Joseph Smith’s youthful involvement in folk magic and money
digging to discredit his character and his prophetic claims.
10 And I will give unto him power to be mighty in testimony. 11 And I
will give unto thee power to be mighty in expounding all scriptures,
that thou mayest be a spokesman unto him, and he shall be a revelator
unto thee, that thou mayest know the certainty of all things pertaining
to the things of my kingdom on the earth.
Note: The kingdom of God concerns Jesus Christ.
Then Paul dwelt two whole years in his own rented house, and received
all who came to him, 31 preaching the kingdom of God and teaching the
things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence, no one
forbidding him. Acts 28:30-31
12 Therefore, continue your journey and let your hearts rejoice; for
behold, and lo, I am with you even unto the end. 13 And now I give unto
you a word concerning Zion. Zion shall be redeemed, although she is
chastened for a little season.
Note: LDS fanatics were chastened from all of Missouri.
General Clark cited Executive Order 44 soon after the Mormon settlers
surrendered in November 1838, saying that violence would have been used
had they chosen not to surrender. ...The order of the governor
was to me, that you should be exterminated, and not allowed to remain
in the state; and had not your leaders been given up, and the terms of
this treaty complied with, your families before this time would have
been destroyed, and your houses in ashes. There is a discretionary
power vested in my hands, which concerning your circumstances I will
exercise for a season...
14 Thy brethren, my servants Orson Hyde and John Gould, are in my
hands; and inasmuch as they keep my commandments they shall be saved.
15 Therefore, let your hearts be comforted; for all things shall work
together for good to them that walk uprightly, and to the
sanctification of the church. 16 For I will raise up unto myself a pure
people, that will serve me in righteousness;
Note: LDS fanatics were chastened from all of Missouri.
General Clark explicitly stated that the Mormons should expect no mercy
and that their leaders would not be returned to them. Clark furthermore
stated: I do not say you shall go now, but you must not think of
staying here another season, or of putting in crops, for the moment you
do this, the citizens will be upon you; and if I am called here again,
in a case of a non-compliance of a treaty made, do not think I will do
as I have now. You need not expect any mercy, but extermination, for I
am determined the governor's orders be executed. As for your leaders,
do not think, do not imagine for a moment, do not let it enter into
your mind, that they will be delivered and restored to you again, for
their fate is fixed, their die is cast, their doom is sealed.
Consequently, approximately 15,000 Mormons promptly fled to Illinois,
enduring the harsh winter conditions.
17 And all that call upon the name of the Lord, and keep his commandments, shall be saved. Even so. Amen.
Note: Believers have confessed Jesus Christ for salvation.
But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your
heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you
confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that
God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart
one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made
unto salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will
not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and
Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For
“whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.” Romans 10:8-13
