The Doctrine and Covenants
SECTION 112
Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet to
Thomas B. Marsh, President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, at
Kirtland, Ohio, July 23, 1837. At this time there was significant
dissension in the Church over Joseph Smith’s leadership, including
among some of the Apostles. In the months before this revelation was
given, Thomas B. Marsh had worked to end the conflict among Church
leaders and unite the Apostles.
1–10, The Twelve are to send the gospel and raise the warning voice to
all nations and people; 11–15, They are to take up their cross, follow
Jesus, and feed His sheep; 16–20, Those who receive the First
Presidency receive the Lord; 21–29, Darkness covers the earth, and only
those who believe and are baptized will be saved; 30–34, The First
Presidency and the Twelve hold the keys of the dispensation of the
fulness of times.
1 Verily thus saith the Lord unto you my servant Thomas: I have heard
thy prayers; and thine alms have come up as a memorial before me, in
behalf of those, thy brethren, who were chosen to bear testimony of my
name and to send it abroad among all nations, kindreds, tongues, and
people, and ordained through the instrumentality of my servants. 2
Verily I say unto you, there have been some few things in thine heart
and with thee with which I, the Lord, was not well pleased. 3
Nevertheless, inasmuch as thou hast abased thyself thou shalt be
exalted; therefore, all thy sins are forgiven thee.
Note: Thomas Marsh realized that Joseph Smith was a dictator.
Although disfellowshipped, David Whitmer, John Whitmer, Oliver Cowdery,
W.W. Phelps, and other former leaders (who were known as the
"dissenters") continued to live in the county. According to Reed Peck,
two of these Danites, Jared Carter and Dimick B. Huntington, proposed
at a meeting that the society should kill the dissenters. Marsh and
fellow moderate, John Corrill, spoke vigorously against the motion.[11]
However, on the following Sunday, Rigdon issued his "Salt Sermon," in
which he likened the dissenters to salt that had lost its savor and was
"good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of
men". Within a week the dissenters had fled the county.
4 Let thy heart be of good cheer before my face; and thou shalt bear
record of my name, not only unto the Gentiles, but also unto the Jews;
and thou shalt send forth my word unto the ends of the earth. 5 Contend
thou, therefore, morning by morning; and day after day let thy warning
voice go forth; and when the night cometh let not the inhabitants of
the earth slumber, because of thy speech. 6 Let thy habitation be known
in Zion, and remove not thy house; for I, the Lord, have a great work
for thee to do, in publishing my name among the children of men.
Note: Thomas Marsh realized that Joseph Smith was a dictator.
On October 18, a group of Mormons entered Daviess County and engaged in
the looting and burning of non-Mormon settlements, including Gallatin.
Marsh stated: “A company of about eighty of the Mormons, commanded by a
man fictitiously named Captain Fearnot [David W. Patten], marched to
Gallatin. They returned and said they had run off from Gallatin twenty
or thirty men and had taken Gallatin, had taken one prisoner and
another had joined the company. I afterwards learned from the Mormons
that they had burned Gallatin, and that it was done by the aforesaid
company that marched there. The Mormons informed me that they had
hauled away all the goods from the store in Gallatin, and deposited
them at the Bishop's storehouses at Adam-ondi-Ahmon.” On October 19,
1838, the day after Gallatin was burned, Marsh and fellow apostle,
Orson Hyde, left the association of the church.
7 Therefore, gird up thy loins for the work. Let thy feet be shod also,
for thou art chosen, and thy path lieth among the mountains, and among
many nations. 8 And by thy word many high ones shall be brought low,
and by thy word many low ones shall be exalted. 9 Thy voice shall be a
rebuke unto the transgressor; and at thy rebuke let the tongue of the
slanderer cease its perverseness. 10 Be thou humble; and the Lord thy
God shall lead thee by the hand, and give thee answer to thy prayers.
11 I know thy heart, and have heard thy prayers concerning thy
brethren. Be not partial towards them in love above many others, but
let thy love be for them as for thyself; and let thy love abound unto
all men, and unto all who love my name.
Note: Thomas Marsh realized that Joseph Smith was a dictator.
Marsh drafted and signed a legal affidavit against Smith on October 24,
1838, which Hyde also signed. In addition to reporting on the
organization of the Danites and on the events in Daviess County, Marsh
reported rumors that the Danites had set up a "destroying company" and
that "if the people of Clay & Ray made any movement against them,
this destroying company was to burn Liberty & Richmond."
12 And pray for thy brethren of the Twelve. Admonish them sharply for
my name’s sake, and let them be admonished for all their sins, and be
ye faithful before me unto my name. 13 And after their temptations, and
much tribulation, behold, I, the Lord, will feel after them, and if
they harden not their hearts, and stiffen not their necks against me,
they shall be converted, and I will heal them. 14 Now, I say unto you,
and what I say unto you, I say unto all the Twelve: Arise and gird up
your loins, take up your cross, follow me, and feed my sheep. 15 Exalt
not yourselves; rebel not against my servant Joseph; for verily I say
unto you, I am with him, and my hand shall be over him; and the keys
which I have given unto him, and also to youward, shall not be taken
from him till I come. 16 Verily I say unto you, my servant Thomas, thou
art the man whom I have chosen to hold the keys of my kingdom, as
pertaining to the Twelve, abroad among all nations— 17 That thou mayest
be my servant to unlock the door of the kingdom in all places where my
servant Joseph, and my servant Sidney, and my servant Hyrum, cannot
come; 18 For on them have I laid the burden of all the churches for a
little season.
Note: Thomas Marsh realized that Joseph Smith was a dictator.
He further stated his belief that Smith planned "to take the State,
& he professes to his people to intend taking the U.S. &
ultimately the whole world". The committee that received Marsh's and
Hyde's affidavit noted that Marsh and Hyde left the church due to their
"conviction of [the Mormons'] immorality and impiety."
19 Wherefore, whithersoever they shall send you, go ye, and I will be
with you; and in whatsoever place ye shall proclaim my name an
effectual door shall be opened unto you, that they may receive my word.
20 Whosoever receiveth my word receiveth me, and whosoever receiveth
me, receiveth those, the First Presidency, whom I have sent, whom I
have made counselors for my name’s sake unto you.
Note: The First Presidency committed fraud.
Under the advice of non-Mormon legal counsel, the Kirtland Safety
Society Anti-Banking Company (KSSABC) was formed under revised articles
on January 2, 1837 as a joint stock company to serve as a quasi-banking
institution. "Anti" and "ing" were engraved before and after "Bank"—in
smaller typeface—on the printing plates Cowdery had previously
purchased in Philadelphia. Subscribers and organizers of the KSSABC
were members of the Kirtland community (merchants, farmers, etc.), many
of whom became shareholders of the company. Sidney Rigdon served as the
KSSABC's chairman and president, Warren Parrish as signatory, secretary
and teller; Joseph Smith was cashier.
21 And again, I say unto you, that whosoever ye shall send in my name,
by the voice of your brethren, the Twelve, duly recommended and
authorized by you, shall have power to open the door of my kingdom unto
any nation whithersoever ye shall send them—
Note: The kingdom of God concerns Jesus Christ.
Then Paul dwelt two whole years in his own rented house, and received
all who came to him, preaching the kingdom of God and teaching the
things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence, no one
forbidding him. Acts 28:30-31
22 Inasmuch as they shall humble themselves before me, and abide in my word, and hearken to the voice of my Spirit.
Note: The Holy Spirit will testify of Jesus Christ.
“But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father,
the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of
Me. And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from
the beginning.” John 15:26-27
23 Verily, verily, I say unto you, darkness covereth the earth, and
gross darkness the minds of the people, and all flesh has become
corrupt before my face. 24 Behold, vengeance cometh speedily upon the
inhabitants of the earth, a day of wrath, a day of burning, a day of
desolation, of weeping, of mourning, and of lamentation; and as a
whirlwind it shall come upon all the face of the earth, saith the Lord.
Note: The end of the world did not occur in the 19th century.
Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them! Woe to the
inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to
you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time.”
Revelation 12:12
25 And upon my house shall it begin, and from my house shall it go
forth, saith the Lord; 26 First among those among you, saith the Lord,
who have professed to know my name and have not known me, and have
blasphemed against me in the midst of my house, saith the Lord. 27
Therefore, see to it that ye trouble not yourselves concerning the
affairs of my church in this place, saith the Lord.
Note: Joseph Smith was losing control of the Kirtland LDS church.
Smith transferred all of his holdings to Oliver Granger and J. Carter
in June and resigned from the KSSABC in July. Parrish and Frederick G.
Williams assumed management of the KSSABC until the institution closed
its doors in November with about $100,000 in unresolved debt. Smith
appointed Granger as his agent to clear up his Kirtland affairs, as
Smith was named in seventeen lawsuits with claims totalling $30,206.44
over debts incurred in the failure of the KSSABC.
28 But purify your hearts before me; and then go ye into all the world,
and preach my gospel unto every creature who has not received it;
Note: The Christian Gospel is Jesus Christ.
Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to
you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you
are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless
you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I
also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the
Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third
day according to the Scriptures 1 Corinthians 15:1-4
29 And he that believeth and is baptized shall be saved, and he that believeth not, and is not baptized, shall be damned.
Note: The Christian Gospel is not baptism.
For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not
with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no
effect. 1 Corinthians 1:17
30 For unto you, the Twelve, and those, the First Presidency, who are
appointed with you to be your counselors and your leaders, is the power
of this priesthood given, for the last days and for the last time, in
the which is the dispensation of the fulness of times, 31 Which power
you hold, in connection with all those who have received a dispensation
at any time from the beginning of the creation; 32 For verily I say
unto you, the keys of the dispensation, which ye have received, have
come down from the fathers, and last of all, being sent down from
heaven unto you.
Note: Joseph Smith has been condemned.
Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our
common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to
contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the
saints. For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were
marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of
our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus
Christ. Jude 1:3-4
33 Verily I say unto you, behold how great is your calling. Cleanse
your hearts and your garments, lest the blood of this generation be
required at your hands. 34 Be faithful until I come, for I come
quickly; and my reward is with me to recompense every man according as
his work shall be. I am Alpha and Omega. Amen.
Note: The work of Joseph Smith was treason.
On October 27, 1838, Missouri Governor Lilburn W. Boggs issued Missouri
Executive Order 44 during the 1838 Mormon War. The order stated that
"the Mormons must be treated as enemies, and must be exterminated or
driven from the State if necessary for the public peace". While it
authorized military force and expulsion from Missouri, it did not offer
a specific private cash reward or bounty for Joseph Smith's head,
though it led to his arrest on charges including treason.
