The Doctrine and Covenants
SECTION 74
Revelation given to Joseph Smith the Prophet, at Wayne
County, New York, in 1830. Even before the organization of the Church,
questions had arisen about the proper mode of baptism, leading the
Prophet to seek answers on the subject. Joseph Smith’s history states
that this revelation is an explanation of 1 Corinthians 7:14, a
scripture that had often been used to justify infant baptism.
1–5, Paul counsels the Church of his day not to keep the law of Moses;
6–7, Little children are holy and are sanctified through the Atonement.
1 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the
unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband; else were your children
unclean, but now are they holy.
Note: The Holy Bible was plagiarized.
For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the
unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband; otherwise your children
would be unclean, but now they are holy. 1 Corinthians 7:14
2 Now, in the days of the apostles the law of circumcision was had
among all the Jews who believed not the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Note: The Christian Gospel is Jesus Christ.
Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to
you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you
are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless
you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I
also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the
Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third
day according to the Scriptures. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4
3 And it came to pass that there arose a great contention among the
people concerning the law of circumcision, for the unbelieving husband
was desirous that his children should be circumcised and become subject
to the law of Moses, which law was fulfilled.
Note: 1 Corinthians chapter 7 is about marriage not circumcision.
But if the unbeliever departs, let him depart; a brother or a sister is
not under bondage in such cases. But God has called us to peace. For
how do you know, O wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do
you know, O husband, whether you will save your wife? 1 Corinthians
7:15-16
4 And it came to pass that the children, being brought up in subjection
to the law of Moses, gave heed to the traditions of their fathers and
believed not the gospel of Christ, wherein they became unholy.
Note: 1 Corinthians chapter 7 is about marriage not circumcision.
Now concerning the things of which you wrote to me: It is good for a
man not to touch a woman. Nevertheless, because of sexual immorality,
let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own
husband. Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and
likewise also the wife to her husband. 1 Corinthians 7:1-3
5 Wherefore, for this cause the apostle wrote unto the church, giving
unto them a commandment, not of the Lord, but of himself, that a
believer should not be united to an unbeliever; except the law of Moses
should be done away among them, 6 That their children might remain
without circumcision; and that the tradition might be done away, which
saith that little children are unholy; for it was had among the Jews; 7
But little children are holy, being sanctified through the atonement of
Jesus Christ; and this is what the scriptures mean.
Note: 1 Corinthians chapter 7 is about marriage not circumcision.
The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband
does. And likewise, the husband does not have authority over his own
body, but the wife does. Do not deprive one another except with consent
for a time, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and
come together again so that Satan does not tempt you because of your
lack of self-control. 1 Corinthians 7:4-5
