The Doctrine and Covenants
SECTION 89
Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, at
Kirtland, Ohio, February 27, 1833. As a consequence of the early
brethren using tobacco in their meetings, and how that concerned his
wife, Emma Smith, the Prophet inquired of the Lord concerning it. This
revelation, known as the Word of Wisdom, was the result.
1–9, The use of wine, strong drinks, tobacco, and hot drinks is
proscribed; 10–17, Herbs, fruits, flesh, and grain are ordained for the
use of man and of animals; 18–21, Obedience to gospel law, including
the Word of Wisdom, brings temporal and spiritual blessings.
1 A WORD OF WISDOM, for the benefit of the council of high priests,
assembled in Kirtland, and the church, and also the saints in Zion—2 To
be sent greeting; not by commandment or constraint, but by revelation
and the word of wisdom, showing forth the order and will of God in the
temporal salvation of all saints in the last days—
Note: The will of God is for everyone to sincerely believe in Jesus Christ.
“And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the
Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him
up at the last day.” John 6:40
3 Given for a principle with promise, adapted to the capacity of the
weak and the weakest of all saints, who are or can be called saints. 4
Behold, verily, thus saith the Lord unto you: In consequence of evils
and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in
the last days, I have warned you, and forewarn you, by giving unto you
this word of wisdom by revelation—
Note: Yahweh eliminated the office of prophet by Jesus Christ.
God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the
fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His
Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He
made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express
image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power,
when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of
the Majesty on high, having become so much better than the angels, as
He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. Hebrews
1:1-4
5 That inasmuch as any man drinketh wine or strong drink among you,
behold it is not good, neither meet in the sight of your Father, only
in assembling yourselves together to offer up your sacraments before
him. 6 And, behold, this should be wine, yea, pure wine of the grape of
the vine, of your own make.
Note: The first miracle of Jesus Christ was turning water into wine.
Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the
manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons
apiece. Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they
filled them up to the brim. And He said to them, “Draw some out now,
and take it to the master of the feast.” And they took it. When the
master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine and did not
know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water
knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom. And he said to
him, “Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the
guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine
until now!” This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee and
manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him. John 2:6-11
7 And, again, strong drinks are not for the belly, but for the washing of your bodies.
Note: This was a typical use of alcohol in the 19th century.
Alcoholic tonics, colognes, and herbal infusions (such as Hungary water
or spirits mixed with camphor) were rubbed or dabbed onto the skin,
forehead, or underarms to cool the body during fevers, refresh fainting
or hysterical individuals, or revive someone suffering from "nerves".
8 And again, tobacco is not for the body, neither for the belly, and is
not good for man, but is an herb for bruises and all sick cattle, to be
used with judgment and skill.
Note: This home remedy went out of use by the mid-19th century.
In the 19th century, tobacco was widely used in folk and domestic
medicine to treat bruises, open sores, and wounds. While mainstream
physicians began phasing it out by the mid-1800s due to growing
awareness of nicotine toxicity, everyday people, frontier settlers, and
traditional healers heavily relied on it as a home remedy.
9 And again, hot drinks are not for the body or belly.
Note: Joseph Smith was a false prophet.
Drinking hot water provides basic hydration just like room-temperature
or cold water, while the warmth itself offers a few soothing and
practical comfort benefits according to the UT MD Anderson Cancer
Center and UVA Health. Hot tea provides rich hydration, antioxidants,
and potential protection against chronic health conditions. Hot coffee
provides powerful mental, metabolic, and long-term health benefits when
consumed in moderation.
10 And again, verily I say unto you, all wholesome herbs God hath
ordained for the constitution, nature, and use of man—11 Every herb in
the season thereof, and every fruit in the season thereof; all these to
be used with prudence and thanksgiving.
Note: This was not revelation.
And God said, “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which
is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields
seed; to you it shall be for food. Also, to every beast of the earth,
to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth,
in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food”; and it
was so. Genesis 1:29-30
12 Yea, flesh also of beasts and of the fowls of the air, I, the Lord,
have ordained for the use of man with thanksgiving; nevertheless they
are to be used sparingly; 13 And it is pleasing unto me that they
should not be used, only in times of winter, or of cold, or famine.
Note: Joseph Smith was wrong about sparingly.
Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. I have given you
all things, even as the green herbs. But you shall not eat flesh with
its life, that is, its blood. Genesis 9:3-4
14 All grain is ordained for the use of man and of beasts, to be the
staff of life, not only for man but for the beasts of the field, and
the fowls of heaven, and all wild animals that run or creep on the
earth; 15 And these hath God made for the use of man only in times of
famine and excess of hunger.
Note: Isaac blessed Jacob with plenty of wine and grain.
He said, “Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son’s game, so that
my soul may bless you.” So, he brought it near to him, and he ate; and
he brought him wine, and he drank. Then his father Isaac said to him,
“Come near now and kiss me, my son.” And he came near and kissed him;
and he smelled the smell of his clothing, and blessed him and said:
“Surely, the smell of my son is like the smell of a field which the
LORD has blessed. Therefore, may God give you of the dew of heaven, of
the fatness of the earth, and plenty of grain and wine. Let people
serve you, and nations bow down to you. Be master over your brethren
and let your mother’s sons bow down to you. Cursed be everyone who
curses you and blessed be those who bless you!” Genesis 27:25-29
16 All grain is good for the food of man; as also the fruit of the
vine; that which yieldeth fruit, whether in the ground or above the
ground— 17 Nevertheless, wheat for man, and corn for the ox, and oats
for the horse, and rye for the fowls and for swine, and for all beasts
of the field, and barley for all useful animals, and for mild drinks,
as also other grain.
Note: Joseph saved the Middle East by storing grain.
Then the seven years of plenty which were in the land of Egypt ended,
and the seven years of famine began to come, as Joseph had said. The
famine was in all lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread.
So, when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to
Pharaoh for bread. Then Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, “Go to
Joseph; whatever he says to you, do.” The famine was over all the face
of the earth, and Joseph opened all the storehouses and sold to the
Egyptians. And the famine became severe in the land of Egypt. So, all
countries came to Joseph in Egypt to buy grain, because the famine was
severe in all lands. Genesis 41:53-57
18 And all saints who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in
obedience to the commandments, shall receive health in their navel and
marrow to their bones; 19 And shall find wisdom and great treasures of
knowledge, even hidden treasures; 20 And shall run and not be weary,
and shall walk and not faint.
Note: Believers should not be concerned about food and clothing.
“Therefore, I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will
eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on.
Is life not more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the
birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns;
yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than
they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? So why
do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they
grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even
Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God
so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is
thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little
faith? Therefore, do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What
shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things
the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all
these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness,
and all these things shall be added to you. Matthew 6:25-33
21 And I, the Lord, give unto them a promise, that the destroying angel
shall pass by them, as the children of Israel, and not slay them. Amen.
Note: Believers are saved by Jesus Christ not by abstaining from food and drinks.
For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for
the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps
for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His
own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died
for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we
shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies we
were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having
been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only that, but
we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we
have now received the reconciliation. Romans 5:6-11
