The Doctrine and Covenants
SECTION 90
Revelation to Joseph Smith the Prophet, given at
Kirtland, Ohio, March 8, 1833. This revelation is a continuing step in
the establishment of the First Presidency (see the heading to section
81); as a consequence thereof, the counselors mentioned were ordained
on March 18, 1833.
1–5, The keys of the kingdom are committed to Joseph Smith and through
him to the Church; 6–7, Sidney Rigdon and Frederick G. Williams are to
serve in the First Presidency; 8–11, The gospel is to be preached to
the nations of Israel, to the Gentiles, and to the Jews, every man
hearing in his own tongue; 12–18, Joseph Smith and his counselors are
to set the Church in order; 19–37, Various individuals are counseled by
the Lord to walk uprightly and serve in His kingdom.
1 Thus saith the Lord, verily, verily I say unto you my son, thy sins
are forgiven thee, according to thy petition, for thy prayers and the
prayers of thy brethren have come up into my ears. 2 Therefore, thou
art blessed from henceforth that bear the keys of the kingdom given
unto you; which kingdom is coming forth for the last time. 3 Verily I
say unto you, the keys of this kingdom shall never be taken from you,
while thou art in the world, neither in the world to come; 4
Nevertheless, through you shall the oracles be given to another, yea,
even unto the church.
Note: Joseph Smith did not have the keys to Liberty Jail.
Joseph Smith and five other Latter Day Saint leaders were imprisoned in
Liberty Jail in Liberty, Missouri, from December 1, 1838, to April 6,
1839, during the 1838 Mormon War.
Note: Joseph Smith did not have the keys to Carthage Jail.
Joseph Smith, the founder and leader of the Latter Day Saint movement,
and his brother, Hyrum Smith, were killed by a mob in Carthage,
Illinois, United States, on June 27, 1844, while awaiting trial in the
town jail on charges of treason.
5 And all they who receive the oracles of God, let them beware how they
hold them lest they are accounted as a light thing, and are brought
under condemnation thereby, and stumble and fall when the storms
descend, and the winds blow, and the rains descend, and beat upon their
house.
Note: A wise man will listen to Jesus Christ not Joseph Smith.
“Therefore, whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will
liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain
descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house;
and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.” Matthew 7:24-25
6 And again, verily I say unto thy brethren, Sidney Rigdon and
Frederick G. Williams, their sins are forgiven them also, and they are
accounted as equal with thee in holding the keys of this last kingdom;
Note: Sidney Rigdon was the driving force behind early Mormonism.
A former Reformed Baptist (Campbellite) preacher from Ohio, Rigdon
converted to the church in November 1830 and brought many of his
congregation into the faith. In 1833, he was formally designated as a
"spokesman" for Joseph Smith and the church (recorded in Doctrine and
Covenants 100:9–11), utilizing his strong oratorical and theological
skills. He served as First Counselor in the First Presidency starting
in 1832/1833 and acted as a scribe for Joseph Smith's translation of
the Bible.
7 As also through your administration the keys of the school of the
prophets, which I have commanded to be organized; 8 That thereby they
may be perfected in their ministry for the salvation of Zion, and of
the nations of Israel, and of the Gentiles, as many as will believe; 9
That through your administration they may receive the word, and through
their administration the word may go forth unto the ends of the earth,
unto the Gentiles first, and then, behold, and lo, they shall turn unto
the Jews.
Note: Yahweh eliminated the office of prophet with Jesus Christ.
God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the
fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His
Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He
made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express
image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power,
when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of
the Majesty on high, having become so much better than the angels, as
He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. Hebrews
1:1-4
10 And then cometh the day when the arm of the Lord shall be revealed
in power in convincing the nations, the heathen nations, the house of
Joseph, of the gospel of their salvation.
Note: The Christian Gospel is Jesus Christ.
Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to
you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you
are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless
you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I
also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the
Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third
day according to the Scriptures. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4
11 For it shall come to pass in that day, that every man shall hear the
fulness of the gospel in his own tongue, and in his own language,
through those who are ordained unto this power, by the administration
of the Comforter, shed forth upon them for the revelation of Jesus
Christ.
Note: The Holy Spirit will testify of Jesus Christ.
“But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father,
the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of
Me. And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from
the beginning.” John 15:26-27
12 And now, verily I say unto you, I give unto you a commandment that
you continue in the ministry and presidency. 13 And when you have
finished the translation of the prophets, you shall from thenceforth
preside over the affairs of the church and the school; 14 And from time
to time, as shall be manifested by the Comforter, receive revelations
to unfold the mysteries of the kingdom;
Note: Yahweh eliminated the office prophet with Jesus Christ.
“For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.” Matthew 11:13
15 And set in order the churches, and study and learn, and become
acquainted with all good books, and with languages, tongues, and
people. 16 And this shall be your business and mission in all your
lives, to preside in council, and set in order all the affairs of this
church and kingdom.
Note: The kingdom of God concerns Jesus Christ.
So, when they had appointed him a day, many came to him at his lodging,
to whom he explained and solemnly testified of the kingdom of God,
persuading them concerning Jesus from both the Law of Moses and the
Prophets, from morning till evening. Acts 28:23
17 Be not ashamed, neither confounded; but be admonished in all your
high-mindedness and pride, for it bringeth a snare upon your souls. 18
Set in order your houses; keep slothfulness and uncleanness far from
you. 19 Now, verily I say unto you, let there be a place provided, as
soon as it is possible, for the family of thy counselor and scribe,
even Frederick G. Williams.
Note: Frederick Williams was a successful organizer.
On July 20, 1832, Williams was appointed scribe to Joseph Smith and
joined the church's First Presidency the next year. He was a member of
the committee appointed to publish the Doctrine and Covenants, a
portion of the church's canon, as well as the church's first hymnal
from 1835, compiled by Smith's wife, Emma, under the auspices of F.G.
Williams & Co.
20 And let mine aged servant, Joseph Smith, Sen., continue with his
family upon the place where he now lives; and let it not be sold until
the mouth of the Lord shall name.
Note: Joseph Smith learned the tricks of the magic trade from his father.
Smith practiced his Universalist beliefs through folk religion and
magical beliefs, which included dream Interpretation and visionary
experience, use of "divining rods" and "seer stones", as well as using
magic to identify and dig for buried treasure. Smith modeled each folk
religion and magic tradition for all of his children. Most notably his
son Joseph relied on all three categories of folk magic gifts as he
shared his religious story of obtaining and translating the Book of
Mormon.
21 And let my counselor, even Sidney Rigdon, remain where he now resides until the mouth of the Lord shall name.
Note: Sidney Rigdon suffered a demonic attack in this house.
On one occasion during Joseph’s absence, Sidney informed a body of
Saints that the “keys of the kingdom” had been taken from the Church.
Those present were confused and dismayed by the announcement. Joseph
was immediately sent for and, upon his return, declared that the things
Sidney had taught were false. The Prophet added that, because of the
things Elder Rigdon had said and done, “the devil [would] handle him as
one man handles another.” In fulfillment of Joseph’s words, “a few
weeks after this, Sidney was lying in bed alone, and suddenly ‘an
unseen power lifted him from his bed . . . and tossed him from one side
of the room to the other.’ His family heard the noises coming from the
room and rushed in ‘and found him going from one side of the room to
the other.’” This happened some three times over the course of the
night. Sidney was physically “laid up” for five or six weeks because of
the effects of the experience some five or six weeks. Thus, having
spoken under the influence of the devil, Sidney was then turned over to
the physical buffetings of Lucifer.
22 And let the bishop search diligently to obtain an agent, and let him
be a man who has got riches in store—a man of God, and of strong faith—
23 That thereby he may be enabled to discharge every debt; that the
storehouse of the Lord may not be brought into disrepute before the
eyes of the people. 24 Search diligently, pray always, and be
believing, and all things shall work together for your good, if ye walk
uprightly and remember the covenant wherewith ye have covenanted one
with another.
Note: Joseph Smith continually needed money and eventually formed a bogus bank.
The Kirtland Safety Society (KSS) was first proposed as a bank in 1836,
and eventually organized on January 2, 1837, as a joint stock company,
by leaders and followers of the then-named Church of the Latter-day
Saints. According to KSS's 1837 "Articles of Agreement", it was
intended to serve the financial needs of the growing Latter Day Saint
community in Kirtland, Ohio.
25 Let your families be small, especially mine aged servant Joseph
Smith’s, Sen., as pertaining to those who do not belong to your
families; 26 That those things that are provided for you, to bring to
pass my work, be not taken from you and given to those that are not
worthy—27 And thereby you be hindered in accomplishing those things
which I have commanded you.
Note: Joseph Smith Senior was an alcoholic.
Smith, like his wife Lucy, struggled with depression. Lucy described
her husband’s depression as "deep periods of melancholy," which she
said he "medicated" with alcohol. Other contemporaries of Smith
characterized his self-medication, more severely and chronically, as
persistent alcohol abuse.
28 And again, verily I say unto you, it is my will that my handmaid
Vienna Jaques should receive money to bear her expenses, and go up unto
the land of Zion; 29 And the residue of the money may be consecrated
unto me, and she be rewarded in mine own due time. 30 Verily I say unto
you, that it is meet in mine eyes that she should go up unto the land
of Zion, and receive an inheritance from the hand of the bishop; 31
That she may settle down in peace inasmuch as she is faithful, and not
be idle in her days from thenceforth. 32 And behold, verily I say unto
you, that ye shall write this commandment, and say unto your brethren
in Zion, in love greeting, that I have called you also to preside over
Zion in mine own due time. 33 Therefore, let them cease wearying me
concerning this matter.
Note: Joseph Smith conned Vienna Jaques out of her money.
On March 8, 1833, the Prophet Joseph Smith advised Vienna to give her
monies to the Church. Without hesitation, she offered her all—$1,400.
34 Behold, I say unto you that your brethren in Zion begin to repent,
and the angels rejoice over them. 35 Nevertheless, I am not well
pleased with many things; and I am not well pleased with my servant
William E. McLellin, neither with my servant Sidney Gilbert; and the
bishop also, and others have many things to repent of. 36 But verily I
say unto you, that I, the Lord, will contend with Zion, and plead with
her strong ones, and chasten her until she overcomes and is clean
before me.
Note: Joseph Smith did not understand why his fanatics were a disruption.
In early 1833, Independence, Missouri faced deep social and political
friction driven by the rapid influx of The Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints (Mormons), who viewed the area as their promised
"Zion". This tension erupted into economic competition, cultural
clashes, and anti-slavery fears that culminated in mob violence and the
forced expulsion of Church members later that year.
37 For she shall not be removed out of her place. I, the Lord, have spoken it. Amen.
Note: Joseph Smith was a false prophet.
The expulsion of Latter-day Saints from "Zion" (Jackson County,
Missouri) occurred in late 1833 when local mobs and vigilantes
violently drove the community across the Missouri River. Tensions
flared over the Saints' anti-slavery sentiments, rapid population
growth, cultural differences, and economic competition.
