The Doctrine and Covenants
SECTION 95
Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, at
Kirtland, Ohio, June 1, 1833. This revelation is a continuation of
divine directions to build a house for worship and instruction, the
house of the Lord (see section 88:119–36).
1–6, The Saints are chastened for their failure to build the house of
the Lord; 7–10, The Lord desires to use His house to endow His people
with power from on high; 11–17, The house is to be dedicated as a place
of worship and for the school of the Apostles.
1 Verily, thus saith the Lord unto you whom I love, and whom I love I
also chasten that their sins may be forgiven, for with the chastisement
I prepare a way for their deliverance in all things out of temptation,
and I have loved you—2 Wherefore, ye must needs be chastened and stand
rebuked before my face; 3 For ye have sinned against me a very grievous
sin, in that ye have not considered the great commandment in all
things, that I have given unto you concerning the building of mine
house;
Note: The New Covenant eliminated the importance of tangible temples.
Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will
neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. You
worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is
of the Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true
worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father
is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship
Him must worship in spirit and truth.” John 4:21-24
4 For the preparation wherewith I design to prepare mine apostles to
prune my vineyard for the last time, that I may bring to pass my
strange act, that I may pour out my Spirit upon all flesh—5 But behold,
verily I say unto you, that there are many who have been ordained among
you, whom I have called but few of them are chosen. 6 They who are not
chosen have sinned a very grievous sin, in that they are walking in
darkness at noon-day.
Note: The New Covenant eliminated the importance of tangible temples.
Then Jesus went out and departed from the temple, and His disciples
came up to show Him the buildings of the temple. And Jesus said to
them, “Do you not see all these things? Assuredly, I say to you, not
one stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown
down.” Matthew 24:1-2
7 And for this cause I gave unto you a commandment that you should call
your solemn assembly, that your fastings and your mourning might come
up into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth, which is by interpretation,
the creator of the first day, the beginning and the end. 8 Yea, verily
I say unto you, I gave unto you a commandment that you should build a
house, in the which house I design to endow those whom I have chosen
with power from on high; 9 For this is the promise of the Father unto
you; therefore I command you to tarry, even as mine apostles at
Jerusalem.
Note: Yahweh does not dwell in tangible temples.
“But Solomon built Him a house. However, the Most High does not dwell
in temples made with hands, as the prophet says: ‘Heaven is My throne,
and earth is My footstool. What house will you build for Me? says the
LORD, or what is the place of My rest? Has My hand not made all these
things?’” Acts 7:47-50
10 Nevertheless, my servants sinned a very grievous sin; and
contentions arose in the school of the prophets; which was very
grievous unto me, saith your Lord; therefore, I sent them forth to be
chastened.
Note: Yahweh does not dwell in tangible temples.
“God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of
heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands.” Acts 17:24
11 Verily I say unto you, it is my will that you should build a house.
If you keep my commandments you shall have power to build it.
Note: Believers are the house of God in the New Covenant.
“If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and
He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—
the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither
sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and
will be in you.” John 14:15-17
12 If you keep not my commandments, the love of the Father shall not continue with you, therefore you shall walk in darkness.

“A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will
see Me. Because I live, you will live also. At that day you will know
that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.” John 14:19-20
13 Now here is wisdom, and the mind of the Lord—let the house be built,
not after the manner of the world, for I give not unto you that ye
shall live after the manner of the world;
Note: Believers are the house of God in the New Covenant.
Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My
word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our
home with him.” John 14:23
14 Therefore, let it be built after the manner which I shall show unto
three of you, whom ye shall appoint and ordain unto this power.
Note: Believers are the house of God in the New Covenant.
Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of
God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will
destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are. 1
Corinthians 3:16-17
15 And the size thereof shall be fifty and five feet in width, and let
it be sixty-five feet in length, in the inner court thereof.

Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who
is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you
were bought at a price; therefore, glorify God in your body and in your
spirit, which are God’s. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
16 And let the lower part of the inner court be dedicated unto me for
your sacrament offering, and for your preaching, and your fasting, and
your praying, and the offering up of your most holy desires unto me,
saith your Lord.
Note: Believers are the house of God in the New Covenant.
For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have
a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the
heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with
our habitation which is from heaven, if indeed, having been clothed, we
shall not be found naked. For we who are in this tent groan, being
burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed,
that mortality may be swallowed up by life. Now He who has prepared us
for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a
guarantee. 2 Corinthians 5:1-5
17 And let the higher part of the inner court be dedicated unto me for
the school of mine apostles, saith Son Ahman; or, in other words,
Alphus; or, in other words, Omegus; even Jesus Christ your Lord. Amen.
Note: Believers are the house of God in the New Covenant.
Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow
citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, having
been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ
Himself being the chief cornerstone, in whom the whole building, being
fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also
are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.
Ephesians 2:19-22
