LDS EXALTATION
Gospel Principles – Chapter 47 Critique
The Plan for Our Progression
When we lived with our Heavenly Father, He explained a
plan for our progression. We could become like Him, an exalted being.
The plan required that we be separated from Him and come to earth. This
separation was necessary to prove whether we would obey our Father’s
commandments even though we were no longer in His presence. The plan
provided that when earth life ended, we would be judged and rewarded
according to the degree of our faith and obedience.
Note: Mankind did not have a preexistence but was created on the earth.
“For ask now concerning the days that are past, which
were before you, since the day that God created man on the earth, and
ask from one end of heaven to the other, whether any great thing like
this has happened, or anything like it has been heard.” Deuteronomy 4:32
From the scriptures we learn that there are three
kingdoms of glory in heaven. The Apostle Paul mentioned that he knew a
man who was “caught up to the third heaven” (2 Corinthians 12:2). Paul
named two of the kingdoms in heaven: the celestial and the terrestrial
(see 1 Corinthians 15:40–42). The celestial is the highest, and the
terrestrial is second. Through latter-day revelation we learn that the
third kingdom is the telestial kingdom (see D&C 76:81). We also
learn that there are three heavens or degrees within the celestial
kingdom (see D&C 131:1).
Note: Paul was referring to atmosphere, outer space, and the throne room of God.
There are also celestial bodies and terrestrial bodies;
but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial
is another. There is one glory of the sun, another glory of the moon,
and another glory of the stars; for one star differs from another star
in glory. 1 Corinthians 15:40-41
Note: The throne room of God is beyond our atmosphere and outer space.
After these things I looked, and behold, a door
standing open in heaven. And the first voice which I heard was like a
trumpet speaking with me, saying, “Come up here, and I will show you
things which must take place after this.” Immediately I was in the
Spirit; and behold, a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne.
And He who sat there was like a jasper and a sardius stone in
appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance
like an emerald. Revelation 4:1-3
Exaltation
• What is exaltation?
Exaltation is eternal life, the kind of life God lives.
He lives in great glory. He is perfect. He possesses all knowledge and
all wisdom. He is the Father of spirit children. He is a creator. We
can become like our Heavenly Father. This is exaltation.
Note: Eternal life means no more death.
And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes;
there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no
more pain, for the former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:4
Note: Mankind will never be God.
And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth
and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in
them, I heard saying: “Blessing and honor and glory and power be to Him
who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, forever and ever!” Then the
four living creatures said, “Amen!” And the twenty-four elders fell
down and worshiped Him who lives forever and ever. Revelation 5:13-14
If we prove faithful to the Lord, we will live in the
highest degree of the celestial kingdom of heaven. We will become
exalted, to live with our Heavenly Father in eternal families.
Exaltation is the greatest gift that Heavenly Father can give His
children (see D&C 14:7).
Note: There will be no eternal families.
The same day the Sadducees, who say there is no
resurrection, came to Him and asked Him, saying: “Teacher, Moses said
that if a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his
wife and raise up offspring for his brother. Now there were with us
seven brothers. The first died after he had married, and having no
offspring, left his wife to his brother. Likewise the second also, and
the third, even to the seventh. Last of all the woman died also.
Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will she be?
For they all had her.” Jesus answered and said to them, “You are
mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God. For in the
resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage but are like
angels of God in heaven.” Matthew 22:23-30
Blessings of Exaltation
• What are some blessings that will be given to those who are exalted?
Our Heavenly Father is perfect, and He glories in the
fact that it is possible for His children to become like Him. His work
and glory is “to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man”
(Moses 1:39).
Note: God will always show His grace to believers eternally.
But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great
love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made
us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and
raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places
in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding
riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
Ephesians 2:4-7
Note: Mankind will never be God as grace comes from God.
Those who receive exaltation in the celestial kingdom
through faith in Jesus Christ will receive special blessings. The Lord
has promised, “All things are theirs” (D&C 76:59). These are some
of the blessings given to exalted people:
Note: The special blessing through faith in Jesus Christ is eternal life.
And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 1 John 5:11
1. They will live eternally in the presence of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ (see D&C 76:62).
Note: You will never be a god governing your own planet.
There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were
called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism;
one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in
you all. Ephesians 4:4-6
2. They will become gods (see D&C 132:20–23).
Note: You will never be a god governing your own planet.
For by Him all things were created that are in heaven
and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or
dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through
Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things
consist. Colossians 1:16-17
3. They will be united eternally with
their righteous family members and will be able to have eternal
increase.
Note: There will be no eternal sex and families.
Then some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection,
came to Him; and they asked Him, saying: “Teacher, Moses wrote to us
that if a man’s brother dies, and leaves his wife behind, and leaves no
children, his brother should take his wife and raise up offspring for
his brother. Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife; and
dying, he left no offspring. And the second took her, and he died; nor
did he leave any offspring. And the third likewise. So, the seven had
her and left no offspring. Last of all the woman died also. Therefore,
in the resurrection, when they rise, whose wife will she be? For all
seven had her as wife.” Jesus answered and said to them, “Are you not
therefore mistaken, because you do not know the Scriptures nor the
power of God? For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor
are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.” Mark 12:18-25
4. They will receive a fullness of joy.
Note: Believers will experience fullness of joy.
You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is
fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore. Psalms
16:11
5. They will have everything that our
Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ have—all power, glory, dominion, and
knowledge (see D&C 132:19–20). President Joseph Fielding Smith
wrote: “The Father has promised through the Son that all that he has
shall be given to those who are obedient to His commandments. They
shall increase in knowledge, wisdom, and power, going from grace to
grace, until the fulness of the perfect day shall burst upon them”
(Doctrines of Salvation, comp. Bruce R. McConkie, 3 vols. [1954–56],
2:36; italics in original).
Note: All glory belongs to God.
I am the LORD, that is My name; And My glory I will not give to another, nor My praise to carved images. Isaiah 42:8
Note: All glory belongs to the Father and to the Son.
And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was. John 17:5
Requirements for Exaltation
The time to fulfill the requirements for exaltation is
now (see Alma 34:32–34). President Joseph Fielding Smith said, “In
order to obtain the exaltation we must accept the gospel and all its
covenants; and take upon us the obligations which the Lord has offered;
and walk in the light and the understanding of the truth; and ‘live by
every word that proceedeth forth from the mouth of God’” (Doctrines of
Salvation, 2:43).
Note: The Christian Gospel is only about Jesus Christ.
Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I
preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by
which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached
to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all
that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to
the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the
third day according to the Scriptures. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4
To be exalted, we first must place our faith in Jesus
Christ and then endure in that faith to the end of our lives. Our faith
in Him must be such that we repent of our sins and obey His
commandments.
Note: Believers will overcome through faith and belief in Jesus Christ.
For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And
this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is he
who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of
God? 1 John 5:4-5
He commands us all to receive certain ordinances:
1. We must be baptized.
Note: Baptism is not necessary for salvation.
For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach
the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should
be made of no effect. For the message of the cross is foolishness to
those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power
of God. 1 Corinthians 1:17-18
2. We must receive the laying on of
hands to be confirmed a member of the Church of Jesus Christ and to
receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Note: The gift of the Holy Spirit is received through belief.
Then Peter opened his mouth and said: “In truth I
perceive that God shows no partiality. But in every nation whoever
fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him. The word which
God sent to the children of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus
Christ—He is Lord of all— that word you know, which was proclaimed
throughout all Judea, and began from Galilee after the baptism which
John preached: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit
and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were
oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. And we are witnesses of
all things which He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem,
whom they killed by hanging on a tree. Him God raised up on the third
day, and showed Him openly, not to all the people, but to witnesses
chosen before by God, even to us who ate and drank with Him after He
arose from the dead. And He commanded us to preach to the people, and
to testify that it is He who was ordained by God to be Judge of the
living and the dead. To Him all the prophets witness that, through His
name, whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins.” While
Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all
those who heard the word. Acts 10:34-44
3. Brethren must receive the Melchizedek Priesthood and magnify their callings in the priesthood.
Note: Only Jesus Christ has the Melchizedek Priesthood.
And inasmuch as He was not made priest without an oath
(for they have become priests without an oath, but He with an oath by
Him who said to Him: “The LORD has sworn and will not relent, ‘You are
a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek’”), by so much
more Jesus has become a surety of a better covenant. Hebrews 7:20-22
4. We must receive the temple endowment.
Note: The New Covenant does not require tangible temples.
Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that
the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God,
God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you
are. 1 Corinthians 3:16-17
5. We must be married for eternity, either in this life or in the next.
Note: Marriage is not necessary for salvation.
But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your
mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach):
that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your
heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For
with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth
confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever
believes on Him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction
between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who
call upon Him. For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be
saved.” Romans 10:8-13
In addition to receiving the required ordinances, the Lord commands all of us to:
1. Love God and our neighbors.
Note: Believers will love based on God’s love.
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out
fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made
perfect in love. We love Him because He first loved us. 1 John 4:18-19
2. Keep the commandments.
Note: The commandment of God is love.
This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. John 15:12
3. Repent of our wrongdoings.
Note: Believers will repent when they believe in Jesus Christ.
“Therefore, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the
heavenly vision but declared first to those in Damascus and in
Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to the
Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting
repentance. For these reasons the Jews seized me in the temple and
tried to kill me. Therefore, having obtained help from God, to this day
I stand, witnessing both to small and great, saying no other things
than those which the prophets and Moses said would come— that the
Christ would suffer, that He would be the first to rise from the dead,
and would proclaim light to the Jewish people and to the Gentiles.”
Acts 26:19-23
4. Search out our kindred dead and receive the saving ordinances of the gospel for them.
Note: Baptism for the dead was a pagan ritual.
Otherwise, what will they (pagans) do who are baptized
for the dead, if the dead do not rise at all? Why then are they
(pagans) baptized for the dead? And why do we (Christians) stand in
jeopardy every hour? 1 Corinthians 15:29-30
5. Attend our Church meetings as
regularly as possible so we can renew our baptismal covenants by
partaking of the sacrament.
Note: Remembering the death of Jesus Christ has nothing to do with baptism.
For I received from the Lord that which I also
delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was
betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and
said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in
remembrance of Me.” In the same manner He also took the cup after
supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as
often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” For as often as you eat
this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He
comes. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
6. Love our family members and strengthen them in the ways of the Lord.
Note: Believers are to remember the family of God.
First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all,
that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world. For God is my
witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of His Son, that
without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers, making
request if, by some means, now at last I may find a way in the will of
God to come to you. For I long to see you, that I may impart to you
some spiritual gift, so that you may be established— that is, that I
may be encouraged together with you by the mutual faith both of you and
me. Romans 1:8-12
7. Have family and individual prayers every day.
Note: Believers are to remember the family of God.
Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the
Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, do not cease to give
thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers: that the God of
our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit
of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your
understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of
His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the
saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who
believe, according to the working of His mighty power which He worked
in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right
hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality and power and
might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age
but also in that which is to come. Ephesians 1:15-21
8. Teach the gospel to others by word and example.
Note: Are you an enemy of the cross of Christ?
Brethren, join in following my example, and note those
who so walk, as you have us for a pattern. For many walk, of whom I
have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the
enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is destruction, whose god is
their belly, and whose glory is in their shame—who set their mind on
earthly things. Philippians 3:17-19
9. Study the scriptures.
Note: Are you wasting time on genealogies?
But avoid foolish disputes, genealogies, contentions,
and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and useless.
Reject a divisive man after the first and second admonition, knowing
that such a person is warped and sinning, being self-condemned. Titus
3:9-11
10. Listen to and obey the inspired words of the prophets of the Lord.
Note: There are only false prophets after Jesus Christ.
God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in
time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken
to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through
whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and
the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word
of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the
right hand of the Majesty on high, having become so much better than
the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name
than they. Hebrews 1:1-4
After We Have Been Faithful and Endured to the End
• What happens when we have endured to the end in faithful discipleship to Christ?
Note: Believers will escape the wrath of God.
Come, my people, enter your chambers, and shut your
doors behind you; Hide yourself, as it were, for a little moment, until
the indignation is past. For behold, the LORD comes out of His place to
punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity; The earth will
also disclose her blood and will no more cover her slain. Isaiah
26:20-21
The Lord has said, “If you keep my commandments and
endure to the end you shall have eternal life, which gift is the
greatest of all the gifts of God” (D&C 14:7). President Joseph
Fielding Smith said, “If we will continue in God; that is, keep his
commandments, worship him and live his truth; then the time will come
when we shall be bathed in the fulness of truth, which shall grow
brighter and brighter until the perfect day” (Doctrines of Salvation,
2:36).
Note: Believers will escape the wrath of God.
Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also
will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole
world, to test those who dwell on the earth. Revelation 3:10
The Prophet Joseph Smith taught: “When you climb up a
ladder, you must begin at the bottom, and ascend step by step, until
you arrive at the top; and so it is with the principles of the
gospel—you must begin with the first, and go on until you learn all the
principles of exaltation. But it will be a great while after you have
passed through the veil [died] before you will have learned them. It is
not all to be comprehended in this world; it will be a great work to
learn our salvation and exaltation even beyond the grave” (Teachings of
Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith [2007], 268).
Note: Believers will be changed in an instant not exalted.
Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot
inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption.
Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all
be changed— in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last
trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised
incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put
on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So, when this
corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on
immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written:
“Death is swallowed up in victory.” 1 Corinthians 15:50-54
Joseph Smith taught: “It is the first principle of the
Gospel to know for a certainty the Character of God. … He was once a
man like us; … God himself, the Father of us all, dwelt on an earth,
the same as Jesus Christ himself did” (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph
Smith, sel. Joseph Fielding Smith [1976], 345–46).
Note: Will you believe God or Joseph Smith?
“For I am the LORD, I do not change; Therefore, you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob.” Malachi 3:6
Our Heavenly Father knows our trials, our weaknesses,
and our sins. He has compassion and mercy on us. He wants us to succeed
even as He did.
Note: Will you believe the Holy Bible or the LDS blasphemy?
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above,
and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no
variation or shadow of turning. James 1:17
Imagine what joy each of us will have when we return to
our Heavenly Father if we can say: “Father, I lived according to Thy
will. I have been faithful and have kept Thy commandments. I am happy
to be home again.” Then we will hear Him say, “Well done … ; thou hast
been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many
things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord” (Matthew 25:23).
Note: The will of God is for everyone to believe in Jesus Christ for eternal life.
“And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone
who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I
will raise him up at the last day.” John 6:40
