Have You Cried Out to the LORD?
Old Covenant Examples
Note: Israel cried out to the Lord while in bondage and they were acknowledged.
Now it happened in the process of time that the king of Egypt died.
Then the children of Israel groaned because of the bondage, and they
cried out; and their cry came up to God because of the bondage. So, God
heard their groaning, and God remembered His covenant with Abraham,
with Isaac, and with Jacob. And God looked upon the children of Israel,
and God acknowledged them. Exodus 2:23-25
But the Egyptians mistreated us, afflicted us, and laid hard bondage on
us. Then we cried out to the Lord God of our fathers, and the Lord
heard our voice and looked on our affliction and our labor and our
oppression. So, the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and
with an outstretched arm, with great terror and with signs and wonders.
Deuteronomy 26:6-8
Note: Israel only cried out to the Lord when they were in trouble due to disobedience.
When the children of Israel cried out to the Lord, the Lord raised up a
deliverer for the children of Israel, who delivered them: Othniel the
son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. Judges 3:9
But when the children of Israel cried out to the Lord, the Lord raised
up a deliverer for them: Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a
left-handed man. By him the children of Israel sent tribute to Eglon
king of Moab. Judges 3:15
And the children of Israel cried out to the Lord; for Jabin had nine
hundred chariots of iron, and for twenty years he had harshly oppressed
the children of Israel. Judges 4:3
So, Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites, and the children of Israel cried out to the Lord. Judges 6:6
And the children of Israel cried out to the Lord, saying, “We have
sinned against You, because we have both forsaken our God and served
the Baals!” Judges 10:10
Then they cried out to the Lord, and said, “We have sinned, because we
have forsaken the Lord and served the Baals and Ashtoreths; but now
deliver us from the hand of our enemies, and we will serve You.” 1
Samuel 12:10
Note: Prophets cried out to the Lord and their prayers were answered.
And the people complained against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?”
So, he cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree. When he
cast it into the waters, the waters were made sweet. Exodus 15:24-25
And Samuel took a suckling lamb and offered it as a whole burnt
offering to the Lord. Then Samuel cried out to the Lord for Israel, and
the Lord answered him. 1 Samuel 7:9
Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the fish’s belly. And he
said: “I cried out to the Lord because of my affliction, and He
answered me. “Out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and You heard my
voice.” Jonah 2:1-2
Now while I was speaking, praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of
my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the Lord my God
for the holy mountain of my God, yes, while I was speaking in prayer,
the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being
caused to fly swiftly, reached me about the time of the evening
offering. And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, “O Daniel,
I have now come forth to give you skill to understand. At the beginning
of your supplications the command went out, and I have come to tell
you, for you are greatly beloved; therefore, consider the matter, and
understand the vision: Daniel 9:20-23
Note: Kings cried out to the Lord for deliverance and their prayers were answered.
I will extol You, O Lord, for You have lifted me up, and have not let
my foes rejoice over me. O Lord my God, I cried out to You, and You
healed me. Psalm 30:1-2
For I said in my haste, “I am cut off from before Your eyes”;
Nevertheless, You heard the voice of my supplications when I cried out
to You. Psalm 31:22
In the day when I cried out, You answered me, and made me bold with strength in my soul. Psalm 138:3
And Asa cried out to the Lord his God, and said, “Lord, it is nothing
for You to help, whether with many or with those who have no power;
help us, O Lord our God, for we rest on You, and in Your name we go
against this multitude. O Lord, You are our God; do not let man prevail
against You!” 2 Chronicles 14:11
So it was, when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, that they
said, “It is the king of Israel!” Therefore, they surrounded him to
attack; but Jehoshaphat cried out, and the Lord helped him, and God
diverted them from him. 2 Chronicles 18:31
Now because of this King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah, the son of
Amoz, prayed and cried out to heaven. Then the Lord sent an angel who
cut down every mighty man of valor, leader, and captain in the camp of
the king of Assyria. So, he returned shamefaced to his own land. And
when he had gone into the temple of his god, some of his own offspring
struck him down with the sword there. 2 Chronicles 32:20-21
Note: Individuals cried out to the Lord for deliverance and their prayers were answered.
In my distress I called upon the Lord, and cried out to my God; He
heard my voice from His temple, and my cry came before Him, even to His
ears. Psalm 18:6
The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles. Psalm 34:17
When I cry out to You, then my enemies will turn back; This I know, because God is for me. Psalm 56:9
I will cry out to God Most High, to God who performs all things for me.
He shall send from heaven and save me; He reproaches the one who would
swallow me up. Psalm 57:2-3
Hear my prayer, O Lord, and let my cry come to You. Do not hide Your
face from me in the day of my trouble; Incline Your ear to me; In the
day that I call, answer me speedily. Psalm 102:1-2
New Covenant Examples
Note: Individuals cried out to Jesus Christ and He heard them.
When Jesus departed from there, two blind men followed Him, crying out
and saying, “Son of David, have mercy on us!” And when He had come into
the house, the blind men came to Him. And Jesus said to them, “Do you
believe that I am able to do this?” They said to Him, “Yes, Lord.”
Matthew 9:27-28
Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him
who believes.” Immediately the father of the child cried out and said
with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” When Jesus saw that
the people came running together, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying
to it, “Deaf and dumb spirit, I command you, come out of him and enter
him no more!” Mark 9:23-25
And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out
and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Then many warned him
to be quiet; but he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy
on me!” So, Jesus stood still and commanded him to be called. Then they
called the blind man, saying to him, “Be of good cheer. Rise, He is
calling you.” And throwing aside his garment, he rose and came to
Jesus. So, Jesus answered and said to him, “What do you want Me to do
for you?” The blind man said to Him, “Rabboni, that I may receive my
sight.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you
well.” And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus on the
road. Mark 10:47-52
Then Jesus went out from there and departed to the region of Tyre and
Sidon. And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried
out to Him, saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My
daughter is severely demon-possessed.” But He answered her not a word.
And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, “Send her away, for she
cries out after us.” But He answered and said, “I was not sent except
to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” Then she came and worshiped
Him, saying, “Lord, help me!” But He answered and said, “It is not good
to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.” And she
said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall
from their masters’ table.” Then Jesus answered and said to her, “O
woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.” And her
daughter was healed from that very hour. Matthew 15:21-28
Now as they went out of Jericho, a great multitude followed Him. And
behold, two blind men sitting by the road, when they heard that Jesus
was passing by, cried out, saying, “Have mercy on us, O Lord, Son of
David!” Then the multitude warned them that they should be quiet; but
they cried out all the more, saying, “Have mercy on us, O Lord, Son of
David!” So, Jesus stood still and called them, and said, “What do you
want Me to do for you?” They said to Him, “Lord, that our eyes may be
opened.” So, Jesus had compassion and touched their eyes. And
immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed Him. Matthew
20:29-34
Then the blind and the lame came to Him in the temple, and He healed
them. But when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things
that He did, and the children crying out in the temple and saying,
“Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant and said to Him, “Do
You hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes. Have you
never read, ‘Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have
perfected praise’?” Matthew 21:14-16
Note: Christians cry out to a loving God the Father as His children.
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For
you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you
received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”
Romans 8:14-15
Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded
toward one another, according to Christ Jesus, that you may with one
mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Romans 15:5-6
And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” Galatians 4:6
We give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying
always for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of
your love for all the saints; because of the hope which is laid up for
you in heaven, of which you heard before in the word of the truth of
the gospel, which has come to you, as it has also in all the world, and
is bringing forth fruit, as it is also among you since the day you
heard and knew the grace of God in truth; as you also learned from
Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ
on your behalf, 8 who also declared to us your love in the Spirit.
Colossians 1:3-8
Note: Christians will pray earnestly with thanksgiving for peace to preach Jesus Christ.
And being let go, they went to their own companions and reported all
that the chief priests and elders had said to them. So, when they heard
that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: “Lord,
You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in
them, who by the mouth of Your servant David have said: ‘Why did the
nations rage, and the people plot vain things? The kings of the earth
took their stand, and the rulers were gathered together against the
Lord and against His Christ.’ “For truly against Your holy Servant
Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the
Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together to do
whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined before to be done. Now,
Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all
boldness they may speak Your word, by stretching out Your hand to heal,
and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy
Servant Jesus.” And when they had prayed, the place where they were
assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy
Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness. Acts 4:23-31
Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor
giving preference to one another; not lagging in diligence, fervent in
spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation,
continuing steadfastly in prayer; distributing to the needs of the
saints, given to hospitality. Romans 12:10-13
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is
the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the
Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and
supplication for all the saints— and for me, that utterance may be
given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery
of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may
speak boldly, as I ought to speak. Ephesians 6:17-20
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication,
with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the
peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts
and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7
Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving; 3
meanwhile praying also for us, that God would open to us a door for the
word, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in chains,
that I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak. Colossians 4:2-4
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for
this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Therefore, I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers,
intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and
all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life
in all godliness and reverence. 1 Timothy 2:1-2
But the end of all things is at hand; therefore, be serious and watchful in your prayers. 1 Peter 4:7
Note: In heaven, saved people will cry out to the Father and the Son in praise.
Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne,
the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten
thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, saying with a
loud voice: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and
riches and wisdom, and strength and honor and glory and blessing!” And
every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth
and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying:
“Blessing and honor and glory and power be to Him who sits on the
throne, and to the Lamb, forever and ever!” Then the four living
creatures said, “Amen!” And the twenty-four elders fell down and
worshiped Him who lives forever and ever. Revelation 5:11-14
After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one
could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing
before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with
palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, saying,
“Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”
