KING OF KINGS
Note: The LORD God was King of Israel.
Then Samuel said to the people, “It is the LORD who raised up Moses and
Aaron, and who brought your fathers up from the land of Egypt. Now
therefore, stand still, that I may reason with you before the LORD
concerning all the righteous acts of the LORD which He did to you and
your fathers: When Jacob had gone into Egypt, and your fathers cried
out to the LORD, then the LORD sent Moses and Aaron, who brought your
fathers out of Egypt and made them dwell in this place. And when they
forgot the LORD their God, He sold them into the hand of Sisera,
commander of the army of Hazor, into the hand of the Philistines, and
into the hand of the king of Moab; and they fought against them. Then
they cried out to the LORD, and said, we have sinned, because we have
forsaken the LORD and served the Baals and Ashtoreths; but now deliver
us from the hand of our enemies, and we will serve You.’ And the LORD
sent Jerubbaal, Bedan, Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of
the hand of your enemies on every side; and you dwelt in safety. And
when you saw that Nahash king of the Ammonites came against you, you
said to me, ‘No, but a king shall reign over us,’ when the LORD your
God was your king.” 1 Samuel 12:6-12
Note: The Son of God is the King of the world.
Yet I have set My King on My holy hill of Zion. I will declare the
decree: The LORD has said to Me, You are My Son, today I have begotten
You. Ask of Me, and I will give You the nations for Your inheritance,
and the ends of the earth for Your possession. You shall break them
with a rod of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s
vessel. Now therefore, be wise, O kings; Be instructed, you judges of
the earth. Serve the LORD with fear and rejoice with trembling. Kiss
the Son, lest He be angry, and you perish in the way, when His wrath is
kindled but a little. Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.
Psalms 2:6-12
Note: Believers will have the LORD as their King and God.
Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my meditation. Give heed to the
voice of my cry, my King and my God, for to You I will pray. My voice
You shall hear in the morning, O LORD; In the morning I will direct it
to You, and I will look up. Psalms 5:1-3
Note: The LORD as King of the world will end oppression.
The LORD is King forever and ever; The nations have perished out of His
land. LORD, You have heard the desire of the humble; You will prepare
their heart; You will cause Your ear to hear, to do justice to the
fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may oppress no
more. Psalms 10:16-18
Note: The LORD as the King of glory will enter Jerusalem.
Lift up your heads, O you gates! And be lifted up, you everlasting
doors! And the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory?
The LORD strong and mighty, The LORD mighty in battle. Lift up your
heads, O you gates! Lift up, you everlasting doors! And the King of
glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, He
is the King of glory. Psalms 24:7-10
Note: The LORD as King will bless His people with peace.
The LORD sat enthroned at the Flood, and the LORD sits as King forever.
The LORD will give strength to His people; The LORD will bless His
people with peace. Psalms 29:10-11
Note: Believers will be saved from their enemies by God their King.
You are my King, O God, command victories for Jacob. Through You we
will push down our enemies; Through Your name we will trample those who
rise up against us. For I will not trust in my bow, nor shall my sword
save me. But You have saved us from our enemies and have put to shame
those who hated us. In God we boast all day long and praise Your name
forever. Psalms 44:4-8
Note: The Son is King forever in righteousness as the Father has anointed Him.
My heart is overflowing with a good theme; I recite my composition
concerning the King; My tongue is the pen of a ready writer. You are
fairer than the sons of men; Grace is poured upon Your lips; Therefore,
God has blessed You forever. Gird Your sword upon Your thigh, O Mighty
One, with Your glory and Your majesty. And in Your majesty ride
prosperously because of truth, humility, and righteousness; And Your
right hand shall teach You awesome things. Your arrows are sharp in the
heart of the King’s enemies; The people fall under You. Your throne, O
God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of
Your kingdom. You love righteousness and hate wickedness; Therefore
God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness more than Your
companions. Psalms 45:1-7
Note: The LORD is King over all the earth.
Oh, clap your hands, all you peoples! Shout to God with the voice of
triumph! For the LORD Most High is awesome; He is a great King over all
the earth. He will subdue the peoples under us, and the nations under
our feet. He will choose our inheritance for us, the excellence of
Jacob whom He loves. God has gone up with a shout, the LORD with the
sound of a trumpet. Sing praises to God, sing praises! Sing praises to
our King, sing praises! For God is the King of all the earth; Sing
praises with understanding. God reigns over the nations; God sits on
His holy throne. The princes of the people have gathered together, the
people of the God of Abraham. For the shields of the earth belong to
God; He is greatly exalted. Psalms 47
Note: The LORD is the great King in Jerusalem.
Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in
His holy mountain. Beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth
is Mount Zion on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.
God is in her palaces; He is known as her refuge. Psalms 48:1-3
Note: The LORD is the great King who created the earth.
Oh come, let us sing to the LORD! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of
our salvation. Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving; Let
us shout joyfully to Him with psalms. For the LORD is the great God,
and the great King above all gods. In His hand are the deep places of
the earth; The heights of the hills are His also. The sea is His, for
He made it; And His hands formed the dry land. Oh come, let us worship
and bow down; Let us kneel before the LORD our Maker. For He is our
God, and we are the people of His pasture, And the sheep of His hand.
Psalms 95:1-7
Note: The LORD as King has shown the world His salvation.
Oh, sing to the LORD a new song! For He has done marvelous things; His
right hand and His holy arm have gained Him the victory. The LORD has
made known His salvation; His righteousness He has revealed in the
sight of the nations. He has remembered His mercy and His faithfulness
to the house of Israel; All the ends of the earth have seen the
salvation of our God. Shout joyfully to the LORD, all the earth; Break
forth in song, rejoice, and sing praises. Sing to the LORD with the
harp, with the harp and the sound of a psalm, with trumpets and the
sound of a horn; Shout joyfully before the LORD, the King. Psalms 98:1-6
Note: Believers will proclaim, bless, and praise the LORD as King.
I will extol You, my God, O King; And I will bless Your name forever
and ever. Every day I will bless You, and I will praise Your name
forever and ever. Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; And His
greatness is unsearchable. Psalms 145:1-3
Note: Believers will sing praises to the LORD and be joyful in their King.
Praise the LORD! Sing to the LORD a new song, and His praise in the
assembly of saints. Let Israel rejoice in their Maker; Let the children
of Zion be joyful in their King. Let them praise His name with the
dance; Let them sing praises to Him with the timbrel and harp. For the
LORD takes pleasure in His people; He will beautify the humble with
salvation. Psalms 149:1-4
Note: The LORD of hosts is the King Who fills the earth with His glory.
In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne,
high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above
it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his
face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one cried
to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; The whole
earth is full of His glory!” And the posts of the door were shaken by
the voice of him who cried out, and the house was filled with smoke.
So, I said: “Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean
lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes
have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.” Isaiah 6:1-5
Note: The Father and the Son are revealed as the only true God.
“Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel, and his Redeemer, the LORD of
hosts: I am the First and I am the Last; Besides Me there is no God.
And who can proclaim as I do? Then let him declare it and set it in
order for Me, since I appointed the ancient people. And the things that
are coming and shall come, let them show these to them. Do not fear,
nor be afraid; Have I not told you from that time, and declared it? You
are My witnesses. Is there a God besides Me? Indeed, there is no other
Rock; I know not one.” Isaiah 44:6-8
Note: Jesus Christ fulfilled the prophecy of Zechariah as the coming King.
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation,
lowly and riding on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey. Zechariah
9:9
Now when they drew near Jerusalem, and came to Bethphage, at the Mount
of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the
village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and
a colt with her. Loose them and bring them to Me. And if anyone says
anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and
immediately he will send them.” All this was done that it might be
fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: “Tell the daughter
of Zion, ‘Behold, your King is coming to you, lowly, and sitting on a
donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey.’” Matthew 21:1-5
Then, as He was now drawing near the descent of the Mount of Olives,
the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God
with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen, saying:
“‘Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the LORD!’ Peace in
heaven and glory in the highest!” And some of the Pharisees called to
Him from the crowd, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.” But He answered
and said to them, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, the
stones would immediately cry out.” Luke 19:37-40
The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they
heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, took branches of palm
trees and went out to meet Him and cried out: “Hosanna! Blessed is He
who comes in the name of the LORD!’ The King of Israel!” Then Jesus,
when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written: “Fear
not, daughter of Zion; Behold, your King is coming, sitting on a
donkey’s colt.” His disciples did not understand these things at first;
but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things
were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him. John
12:12-16
Note: The LORD shall be King over all the earth.
And in that day it shall be that living waters shall flow from
Jerusalem, half of them toward the eastern sea and half of them toward
the western sea; In both summer and winter it shall occur. And the LORD
shall be King over all the earth. In that day it shall be— “The LORD is
one,” and His name one. Zechariah 14:8-9
And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal,
proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the middle of its
street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which
bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The
leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. And there shall
be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it,
and His servants shall serve Him. They shall see His face, and His name
shall be on their foreheads. There shall be no night there: They need
no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And
they shall reign forever and ever. Revelation 22:1-5
Note: Ancient astronomers came to worship Jesus Christ as King.
Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the
king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where
is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in
the East and have come to worship Him.” Matthew 2:1-2
Note: Nathanael declares Jesus Christ to be the King of Israel.
Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, “Behold, an
Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!” Nathanael said to Him, “How do
You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called
you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” Nathanael answered
and said to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of
Israel!” Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw
you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things
than these.” And He said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you,
hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending
and descending upon the Son of Man.” John 1:47-51
Note: Jesus Christ as King will judge the world in righteousness.
“When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with
Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. All the nations will
be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as
a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. And He will set the sheep
on His right hand, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to
those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the
kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was
hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was
a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was
sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’ Then the
righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry
and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a
stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? Or when did we see
You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ And the King will answer and
say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of
the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’ Then He will also
say to those on the left hand, Depart from Me, you cursed, into the
everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: for I was
hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink;
I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not
clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’ “Then they
also will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or
thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not
minister to You?’ Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Assuredly, I say
to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you
did not do it to Me.’ And these will go away into everlasting
punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” Matthew 25:31-46
Note: Jesus Christ confirms He is King of the Jews.
Now Jesus stood before the governor. And the governor asked Him,
saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?” Jesus said to him, “It is as
you say.” And while He was being accused by the chief priests and
elders, He answered nothing. Matthew 27:11-12
Then Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” He answered and
said to him, “It is as you say.” And the chief priests accused Him of
many things, but He answered nothing. Mark 15:2-3
Then Pilate asked Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?” He answered him and said, “It is as you say.” Luke 23:3
Then Pilate entered the Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said to
Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” Jesus answered him, “Are you
speaking for yourself about this, or did others tell you this
concerning Me?” Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the
chief priests have delivered You to me. What have You done?” Jesus
answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this
world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to
the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.” Pilate therefore said
to Him, “Are You a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I
am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come
into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who
is of the truth hears My voice.” John 18:33-37
Note: God as King deserves honor and glory forever and ever.
This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ
Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. However,
for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might
show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe
on Him for everlasting life. Now to the King eternal, immortal,
invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and
ever. Amen. 1 Timothy 1:15-17
Note: God as King of kings deserves honor and has everlasting power.
Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you
were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence
of many witnesses. I urge you in the sight of God who gives life to all
things, and before Christ Jesus who witnessed the good confession
before Pontius Pilate, that you keep this commandment without spot,
blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ’s appearing, which He will
manifest in His own time, He who is the blessed and only Potentate, the
King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, dwelling in
unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor
and everlasting power. Amen. 1 Timothy 6:12-16
Note: Jesus Christ is the King of righteousness and peace.
For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who
met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,
to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all, first being translated
“king of righteousness,” and then also king of Salem, meaning “king of
peace,” without father, without mother, without genealogy, having
neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of
God, remains a priest continually. Hebrews 7:1-3
Note: The Lord God Almighty is the King of the saints.
And I saw something like a sea of glass mingled with fire, and those
who have the victory over the beast, over his image and over his mark
and over the number of his name, standing on the sea of glass, having
harps of God. They sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the
song of the Lamb, saying: “Great and marvelous are Your works, Lord God
Almighty! Just and true are Your ways, O King of the saints! Who shall
not fear You, O Lord, and glorify Your name? For You alone are holy.
For all nations shall come and worship before You, for Your judgments have been manifested.” Revelation 15:2-4
Note: Jesus Christ as the King of kings will overcome wicked rulers.
“Here is the mind which has wisdom: The seven heads are seven mountains
on which the woman sits. There are also seven kings. Five have fallen,
one is, and the other has not yet come. And when he comes, he must
continue a short time. The beast that was, and is not, is himself also
the eighth, and is of the seven, and is going to perdition. The ten
horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet,
but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. These
are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the
beast. These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome
them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those who are with
Him are called, chosen, and faithful.” Revelation 17:9-14
Note: Jesus Christ is the King of kings and Lord of lords.
Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on
him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and
makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were
many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. He
was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The
Word of God. And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and
clean, followed Him on white horses. Now out of His mouth goes a sharp
sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will
rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the
fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And He has on His robe and on His
thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. Revelation
19:11-16
