WATCHTOWER - AUGUST 1, 1999

Page 4: Of man's creation, we read: "God went on to say: 'Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness, and let them have in subjection the fish of the sea and the flying creatures of the heavens and the domestic animals and all the earth and every moving animal that is moving upon the earth.'"

Note: Did the anyone notice the plurality (trinity) of God? Plural pronouns = multiple persons.

Page 6: The answer lies in the Kingdom for which Jesus Christ taught all his followers to pray: "Our Father in the heavens ... Let your kingdom come. Let your will take place, as in heaven, also upon earth." (Matthew 6:9, 10)

Correction: Equality can only be found in Jesus Christ.

Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Page 6: Yes, God's Kingdom is the means that Jehovah will use to "crush and put an end to all these kingdoms (now in existence), and it itself will stand to times indefinite." - Daniel 2:44.

Correction: Jesus Christ will "crush and put an end to all these kingdoms."

Revelation 19:15 Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

Page 6: Under the rule of the heavenly Kingdom, a new human society will emerge.

Correction: Under the rule of Jesus Christ, a new human society will enjoy earth.

Matthew 19:28-30 So Jesus said to them, "Assuredly I say to you, that in the regeneration, when the Son of Man sits on the throne of His glory, you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My name's sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first."

Page 6: For more than a century, Jehovah's Witnesses have been directing people's attention to that Kingdom. (Matthew 24:14)

Correction: True Christians direct people's attention to Jesus Christ.

Acts 1:8 "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."

Page 6: By means of the printed page and by personal assistance, they have exerted themselves in helping people to gain a knowledge of God's purpose as recorded in the Bible.

Note: The will of the Father is that everyone put their entire trust in the Son.

Ephesians 1:11-12 In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory.

Page 8: And with strong faith in God's promise, they look forward to a new world of righteousness where inequality will forever be a thing of the past.

Correction: True Christians place their faith in Jesus Christ.

Galatians 3:26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

Note: The Promise of the Father is the Holy Spirit.

Acts 1:4-5 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, "which," He said, "you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now."

Page 9: FROM the early hours of Friday, January 29, 1999, and continuing into the weekend, Jehovah's Witnesses in France enthusiastically distributed on the streets and later from house to house, 12 million copies of a tract entitled People of France, You Are Being Deceived! Why such a campaign?

Note: Why such a campaign in light of Scripture?

Romans 13:7 Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor.

Page 9: A Witness spokesman explained: "What we want to do today is make ourselves known for what we are and silence the defamatory statements spread about us. We are willing to accept criticism, but we will no longer listen to lies and comments that damage our reputation."

Correction: Jesus Christ disagrees with the Watchtower!

Luke 6:27-28 "But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you."

Page 9: Unbelievably, even the religious contributions they have received have been assessed for a 60-percent tax.

Correction: Jesus Christ wants you to pay taxes without complaining.

Luke 20:25 And He said to them, "Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."

Page 9: The tract declares: "The 250,000 Jehovah's Witnesses and their associates living in France PROTEST against the dishonest way in which their Christian religion, which has existed in France since 1900, has been lumped together with dangerous sects since 1995 .... PROTEST against the constant harassment to which they have been subjected."

Note: The Watchtower contradicts itself!

Page 20: Do we have to show honor to those outside the congregation? Yes. For example, we are instructed: "Let every soul be in subjection to the superior authorities." (Romans 13:1) These are the secular rulers that Jehovah allows to exercise authority until his Kingdom replaces them.

Page 9: They respect the laws of the States of which they are citizens by upholding the values of the Gospel. People of France, these are the facts. It is our duty to present them as they truly are!"

Correction: True Christians realize that the Gospel is about Jesus Christ.

Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.

1 Corinthians 15:1-4 Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, ... For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,

Page 9: Above all, sincere ones were given the chance to hear the facts about the Witnesses as opposed to fictitious and senseless remarks, and those whose beliefs had been maligned were able to demonstrate their feelings for what they hold dear.

Correction: Jesus Christ disagrees with the Watchtower!

Matthew 5:44 "But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,"

Correction: Paul disagrees with the Watchtower!

1 Corinthians 4:12-13 And we labor, working with our own hands. Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure; being defamed, we entreat. We have been made as the filth of the world, the offscouring of all things until now.

Page 10: Though the point is well taken, what was the writer's intent? His comment was in support of his interpretation of that verse, which he translated: "At the beginning was 'the word;' and 'the word' was with God; and 'the word' was God," a typical Trinitarian rendition.

Correction: The Greek Scriptures support the Trinitarian rendition.

..(In the) arche-beginning ..(was the) logos-Word ..(and the) logos-Word ..(was with) theos-God ..(and the) logos-Word .(was) theos-God.

Page 10: What impelled the writer to translate John 1:1 in support of the Trinitarian doctrine? Is it "the Scripture that informs" him to do so? That is impossible, for nowhere in the Bible is the teaching of the Trinity to be found.

Correction: Jesus Christ is not a active force.

John 14:16-17 "And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever; the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you."

Note: The Greek word parakletos:G3875 or Helper refers strictly to a person.

Page 10: Note what The New Encyclopaedia Britannica says on this point: "Neither the word Trinity nor the explicit doctrine appears in the New Testament."

Note: The Watchtower resorts to The New Encyclopaedia Britannica that proclaims evolution.

1 Corinthians 1:20 Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

Note: The word Bible does not appear in the Bible.

Page 12: Regarding Satan's influence on the people living in these critical last days, the Bible foretells: "Woe for the earth ... because the Devil has come down to you, having great anger, knowing he has a short period of time." (Revelation 12:9-12)

Correction: Satan is still in heaven since the great tribulation has not started yet.

Revelation 6:14 Then the sky receded as a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved out of its place.

Page 12: Paul and other first-century Christians learned this kind of love from the teachings of Jesus. And Jesus learned it from his Father, Jehovah, of whom the Bible says: "God is love."

Correction: Jesus never had to learn love since it is His love.

John 15:9 "As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love."

Page 12: Jesus knew that it was God's will for him to live by the law of love, and he did.

Correction: The will of the Father is that everyone put their entire trust in the Son.

John 6:40 "And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day."

Pages 12-13: Thus, in the midst of a world that is becoming more and more prideful, Jehovah's people display the opposite attitude - lowliness of mind. Such ones say: "Let us go up to the mountain of Jehovah (his elevated true worship), ... and he will instruct us about his ways, and we will walk in his paths." (Isaiah 2:2, 3)

Correction: This is a prophecy about the New Jerusalem which is yet future.

Revelation 21:23-24 The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light. And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it.

Page 13: Jehovah's Witnesses make up this global society walking in God's paths. They include a growing "great crowd, which no man was able to number, out of all nations and tribes and peoples and tongues." (Revelation 7:9)

Correction: Jehovah's Witnesses are not a part of this "great crowd" since it is in heaven.

Revelation 19:1 After these things I heard a loud voice of a great crowd in heaven, saying, "Alleluia! Salvation and glory and honor and power belong to the Lord our God!"

Page 14: When Peter entered the home of Cornelius, that man "fell down at (Peter's) feet and did obeisance to him." But instead of accepting adulation, "Peter lifted him up, saying: 'Rise: I myself am also a man.'" (Acts 10:25, 26)

Note: Jesus Christ never stopped people from worshiping before Him.

Matthew 8:2-3 And behold, a leper came and worshiped Him, saying, "Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean." Then Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying, "I am willing; be cleansed." Immediately his leprosy was cleansed.

Page 14: When Paul and Barnabas were in Lystra, Paul healed a man lame from birth. As a result, the crowds said that these apostles were gods. However, Paul and Barnabas "ripped their outer garments and leaped out into the crowd, crying out and saying: 'Men, why are you doing these things? We also humans having the same infirmities as you do.'" (Acts 14:8-15)

Note: Jesus Christ never stopped people from worshiping before Him.

Matthew 9:18-19 While He spoke these things to them, behold, a ruler came and worshiped Him, saying, "My daughter has just died, but come and lay Your hand on her and she will live." So Jesus arose and followed him, and so did His disciples.

Page 14: John relates: "When I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel that had been showing me these things. But he tells me: 'Be careful! Do not do that! All I am is a fellow slave of you and of your brothers ... Worship God.'" (Revelation 22:8, 9)

Note: Jesus Christ never stopped people from worshiping before Him.

Matthew 14:33 Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, "Truly You are the Son of God."

Matthew 15:25 Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, "Lord, help me!"

Pages 14-15: Jesus was the finest example of one who was lowly in mind. He was God's only- begotten Son, the future King of God's heavenly Kingdom.

Correction: Jesus Christ accepted acclamation from thousands of people.

Matthew 21:9 Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: "Hosanna to the Son of David! 'Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!' Hosanna in the highest!"

Page 15: How happy humble people are that Jesus will be Jehovah's appointed King over the entire earth in the new world, one who is truly lowly in mind, humble, loving, compassionate, merciful! - Isaiah 9:6, 7; Philippians 2:5-8.

Note: Jesus Christ will be reigning the new world on the earth.

Matthew 24:30 "Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory."

Zechariah 14:3 Then the LORD will go forth and fight against those nations, as He fights in the day of battle.

Page 16: Jehovah himself sets the example in showing honor. he created humans with free will and does not treat them like mere robots. (1 Peter 2:16)

Note: All honor is given to the Father and the Son.

Revelation 5:13 And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying: "Blessing and honor and glory and power be to Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, forever and ever!"

Page 17: Jehovah knew that there were not ten righteous men in Sodom, yet he honored Abraham by listening to his view and dealing with him respectfully. Why? Because Abraham "put faith in Jehovah; and he proceeded to count it to him as righteousness."

Note: Christians put their faith in Jesus Christ.

Galatians 3:26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

Page 17: Abraham was called "Jehovah's friend." (Genesis 15:6; James 2:23)

Note: Are you a friend of Jesus?

John 15:14-15 "You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you."

Page 17: Jehovah similarly honored righteous Lot.

Correction: God showed mercy to Lot.

Genesis 19:16 And while he lingered, the men took hold of his hand, his wife's hand, and the hands of his two daughters, the LORD being merciful to him, and they brought him out and set him outside the city.

Page 18: Jesus imitated Jehovah in honoring others. Once in a crowd, there was a woman who had suffered a flow of blood for 12 years.

Correction: Jesus healed the woman.

Mark 5:33-34 But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. And He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction."

Pages 18-19: Then Jesus said: "O woman, great is your faith; let it happen to you as you wish." Her daughter was healed. Jesus honored this Gentile because of her faith.

Correction: Jesus healed this woman's daughter because of her faith.

Page 19: Yet, he taught his disciples an honorable lesson by washing their feet. He said: "I set the pattern for you, that, just as I did to you, you should do also." - John 13:5-15.

Correction: Jesus Christ was teaching His disciples a lesson in discipleship.

John 13:17 "If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them."

Page 21: Jehovah honors his creatures. It is reasonable then that we should, in turn, honor him. (Proverbs 3:9; Revelation 4:11) Jehovah's Word also states: "Those honoring me I shall honor, and those despising me will be of little account." (1 Samuel 2:30)

Note: God will honor you among men so He receives the praise.

Matthew 5:16 "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven."

Page 21: All those who want to live in God's new world after this present system is destroyed must honor God and his Son, Christ Jesus, and obey them. (John 5:22, 23; Philippians 2:9-11)

Note: Will you bow your knees to God at the name of Jesus?

Philippians 2:9-11 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord (kurios = Jehovah), to the glory of God (who?) the Father.

Page 23: Such encouragement is invaluable because of the many negative and hurtful pressures in today's world. As a result of these pressures, Christians have to 'exert themselves vigorously' to stay spiritually strong. (Luke 13:24)

Correction: A true Christian will focus in on Jesus Christ.

John 15:4 "Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me."

Page 23: Others may be struggling to overcome bad habits or depression, or they may find it difficult to keep up with the demands of life. We are wise, therefore, to surround ourselves with people who stay close to Jehovah God and who enjoy serving him.

Correction: A true Christian will focus in on Jesus Christ.

John 12:26 "If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor. "

Page 23: He said: "Unitedly become imitators of me, brothers, and keep your eye on those who are walking in a way that accords with the example you have in us." (Philippians 3:17; 4:9)

Note: The apostle Paul focused in on Jesus Christ.

Philippians 3:14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Page 23: The early Christians in Thessalonica looked to Paul's fine example. Of them Paul wrote: "You became imitators of us and of the Lord, seeing that you accepted the word under much tribulation with joy of holy spirit, so that you came to be an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia." (1 Thessalonians 1:6, 7)

Note: Is your consolation abounding through Jesus Christ?

2 Corinthians 1:5 For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ.

Page 25: Even though we are imperfect and make mistakes, our life will be successful if we let Jehovah guide us and if we liberally tap into that God-given reservoir of wholesome peer influence - "the entire association of (our) brothers in the world." - 1 Peter 5:9.

Note: Are you tapped into Jesus Christ?

1 Peter 5:14 Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to you all who are in Christ Jesus.

Note: Are you tapped into the Holy Spirit?

Romans 14:17 for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

Page 27: I WAS born in Vincennes, Indiana, U.S.A., on February 17, 1912, about two years before the birth of the Messianic Kingdom, as described at Revelation 12:1-5.

Correction: 1914 is based on the bogus date of 607 BCE for the destruction of Jerusalem.

Page 28: We were getting firsthand experience in what Jesus meant when he said: "Because you are no part of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, on this account the world hates you." - John 15:19.

Correction: True Christians will suffer for the name of Jesus.

John 15:21 "But all these things they will do to you for My name's sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me."

Page 28: But then we decided that it would probably be better to wait and let the Society assign us after we had attended Gilead School. We realized that this was an arrangement that Jehovah was using.

Correction: Paul had out assignments to men who were willing to die for the name of Jesus.

Acts 15:24-26 Since we have heard that some who went out from us have troubled you with words, unsettling your souls, saying, "You must be circumcised and keep the law"; to whom we gave no such commandment; it seemed good to us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Page 31: Beyond the great tribulation, when the scrolls referred to at Revelation 20:12 are opened, there will be a thousand years of further intensive education in Jehovah's ways.

Correction: There will be a thousand years of enjoyment in Jesus Christ.

Isaiah 11:10 "And in that day there shall be a Root of Jesse, Who shall stand as a banner to the people; For the Gentiles shall seek Him, and His resting place shall be glorious."
